$1 Billion Available for Wi-Fi in Schools & Libraries
After being stalled in the past few months, E-rate’s funding will be making a comeback. The Federal Communications Commission voted to adopt an E-rate Modernization Order that will expand Wi-Fi networks in schools and libraries across the United States. This modernization would be the first since the program was adopted 18 years ago.
This new Order achieves three major goals:
- Directs at least $1 billion for Wi-Fi for the 2015 and 2016 Funding Years;
- Maximizes E-rate spending, encouraging consortia and bulk purchasing, and increasing transparency on how E-rate dollars are spent;
- Simplifies the E-rate application process and overall program administration.
